Cyclepoint
Without community-based support systems,
cycling facilities alone will make little difference. The Commission
for Integrated Transport recognises that more input is needed from
'soft' projects if significant modal shift is to take place.
We at Company of Cyclists are working with a number of local authorities
on cycling promotion, try-out and training centres which meet key
policy agendas: sustainable transport, public health, social inclusion,
flourishing neighbourhoods and, in some cases, tourism.
We call these Cyclepoints: centres which offer an active and varied
leisure experience, where cyclists and non-cyclists, individually
or in visitor-groups, can have fun taking to bikes, in a supportive
atmosphere, without fear of traffic. Open all year, staffed by local
people, but supported by our expertise. In urban areas they may be
visitor centres, perhaps with a community outreach unit attached.
In rural areas Cyclepoints may take the form of a virtually nothing
but mobile unit constantly touring local communities, schools, workplaces
etc.
A network of Cyclepoints is a natural and logical development from
our current work, providing bike try-out roadshows, consultancy, literature
and support services for our clients. We hope that, over time, regional
Cyclepoints will take on many of the roles of our Get Cycling roadshows.
Our units will continue to tour the UK, but increasingly in a support
role for Cyclepoints.
